Baytown Hurricane Damage: Volunteers and crews work to clear debris after severe storms in Southeast Texas

Betown, Texas (KTRK) – Baytown was another city hard hit by the storm system on Tuesday. Some residents have lost electricity and are now trying to pick up what is left of their belongings.

The early indication is that Weaver Street off Bayway Drive bore the brunt of Tuesday’s tornado. According to Baytown Mayor Brandon Capetillo, at least 12 homes were completely destroyed or damaged. Three people were pulled from their home and rescued once the storm passed.

Eyewitness News was there as neighbors tried to sort through their belongings and clean up as best they could.

City crews worked in conjunction with CenterPoint Energy to remove downed trees and power lines for most of the day. By dusk, Weaver Street was clear enough to pass.

“The area is secured by the Baytown Police Department. So, anyone who wants to come to the area to see the sights, this is not the place to be right now. We are trying to clear this up. All the debris was removed as quickly as possible.”

For the neighbors, Tuesday was one of the worst days of their lives, but they are grateful. So far, in Baytown, there have been no reports of serious injuries or deaths. Ernesto Salinas was working in a nearby factory when he said it was suddenly quiet and dark.

“My aunt was so shaken. Her car was wrecked. She has full coverage, luckily, but they have a trailer there parked that probably moved 20 to 30 yards where it was originally,” he explained.

When disaster strikes, Houston and the surrounding areas band together and help each other. Residents saw it in Baytown Wednesday, whether it was sharing tools, picking up limbs from neighbors’ yards, or church volunteers helping clear debris.
