Sam Smith, who uses their pronouns, first appeared on The Graham Norton Show last Friday in a live show. The 30-year-old reported that the lyrics are based on experiences of being “friends” over and over on dates. Alongside the new album’s single Gloria, I’m Not Here to Make Friends has a controversial new music video that’s being criticized for its “overly sexual” imagery.
The new music video depicts the Academy Award winner arriving at the castle in an oversized pink trench coat before performing inside with dancers wearing nipple tassels, suspenders, and girdles. Other scenes depicted them shoving on a bed in black leather underwear, while a fountain of water was also sprayed into the Bond singer’s mouth.
Responding to the divisive footage, which has already garnered nearly two million views in two days on YouTube, former GB News’ Alex Phillips slammed the film as “unhealthy” for the community on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, when it was corrected. Richard Madley for “misleading” Smith as “he” instead of “they”.
Phillips added: “The problem is the graphic depiction of what could be extreme sex scenes. It’s very nice to say don’t let your kids watch it, kids have cell phones, cell phones – they will watch it. You cannot protect your children from things like this. It doesn’t come with a content warning, and you don’t have to put up a credit card and prove you’re 18 to watch this video.”
Although many agreed with her on social media, calling her “brutal,” “offensive,” and “vulgar” others defended Smith’s video, citing sexual videos of the singers. And someone tweeted: “Blimey, lots of pearl holding! Anyone remember the 70’s and 80’s. Remember Pipes or Divine? Move over everyone’s been done before.”
