Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Circle those almanacs, Coogs fans…and UT Houston experts. The Houston Cougars’ first football season in the Big 12 was packed.

The conference on Tuesday released UH’s schedule for its first year in the Power Five league. Every game, including Houston’s non-conference opponents, carries some kind of intrigue, especially with the University of Texas and University of Oklahoma still in the Big 12 despite their impending presence. Below, you’ll find each opponent, the date of the match, and what you should know about the match:
- Sept. 2: opposite UT-San Antonio.
What you should know: He completes the home-and-home series with the Roadrunners after one season after UH survived a three-overtime battle in 2022.
What you should know: New conferences, but the Bayou Packet rivalry remains. The Owls, who primarily replace UH in the American Athletic Conference, host the Coogs after falling to their cross-town rivals by touchdowns last season.
What you should know: Houston’s first ever opponent in the Big 12. UH hosts a raucous match-up with the National Championship runner-up, The Horned Frogs.
- Sept. 23: opposite Sam Houston State.
What you should know: The Bearcats draw the Coogs as part of their debut season in the Football Championship Subdivision (FBS) after years in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
What you should know: The rivalry continues. The Red Raiders take down the Coogs in 2022 during an overtime thriller. Houston actually holds the series lead at 18-15-1.
- Oct. 12 opposite West Virginia.
What you should know: Coach Dana Holgorsen meets a familiar opponent. The Coogs’ general coached the Mountaineers for seven seasons before signing with UH in 2019.
What you should know: Arguably, the biggest game on Houston’s 2023 schedule. The game rejuvenates a rivalry in the Southwest Conference that dates back to 1953. The teams last faced off 21 years ago.
- 28 Oct: in Kansas.
What you should know: Like West Virginia, UH is facing the wildcats for the first time ever. Kansas State defeated TCU to win the Big 12 and clinch the New Year’s Six Bowl game last season.
What you should know: Another throwback to the days of SWC. The teams last met in 1995 when the Bears claimed a 40-point blast from the Coogs.
What you should know: Two AAC teammates continue their Big 12 rivalry. 2023 marks the first of 12 seasons for UH, Cincy, Central Florida, and BYU.
- November 18th: against Oklahoma State.
What you should know: UH renews a junior rivalry with head coach Mike Gundy and the Cowboys. Houston has a 10-9-1 advantage that dates back to 1951.
- November 25th: in Central Florida.
What you should know: The season ends on the road with a former AAC teammate. UCF has a 7-3 all-time advantage over the Coogs.
The only tickets available for UH games at TDECU Stadium are through the school’s season ticket priority queue. Season tickets will go on sale February 20th. Tickets for one match have yet to be announced.
