The Nothing Ear headphones (1) (above) were designed to challenge the AirPods Pro when they launched last year. But the last post put up OnLeaks (Opens in a new tab) Basim smartbreaks (Opens in a new tab) It appears to reveal some interesting information about a potential next-gen model.
There’s no comment from Nothing on the recent post that appeared on Twitter, which appears to show several images of what the Nothing Ear (2) headphones might look like if they’re released. The images shown (shown below) highlight the external on-ear differences (2), with the noise-canceling mic relocated to a new position on the earbuds’ stem rather than on the top of the earpiece’s main body.
Fortunately, the renderings don’t show off the earbud design (2), which looks different from the transparent original. Although there may be some additional internal modifications, there is no definitive indication as to what these modifications will be at the moment.
ear none 2: analysis
When the Nothing Ear (sticky) earbuds arrived several months ago, it seemed natural to think there would be a successor to the Ear (1) in the works. And perceptions indicate that this is looking increasingly likely. Something that has been put forward by the rumor mill if the Earbuds (2) arrive is that noise-canceling technology can offer greater levels of customization to suit user preferences, making them more effective in different environments.
The current earbuds (1) have two levels of noise cancellation available called Light and Maximum. Although our Nothing Ear review (1) found the settings to be useful for a set of entry-level earphones, we felt they were less likely to cause problems with ANC performance for next-gen styles like the Apple AirPods Pro 2 (Opens in a new tab)or Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2 (Opens in a new tab). Both flagship models offer world-class ANC performance, and none can look forward to stepping up their ANC technology, as well as upgrading the next-generation flagship earphones’ playback and connection control features to keep up with the market leaders.
The post showing the potential Nothing Ear (2) offer does not indicate how close they will arrive. but with a phone nothing (1) (Opens in a new tab)Its successor is confirmed for a US launch later this year, and it seems plausible that the new Buds are planned to launch at the same time.
While there’s no official indication of the Ear (2) launching at this point, I’m tempted to add a note of caution about pricing when it’s announced. Nothing has gained a reputation for releasing models at one price, then increasing it exponentially at a later date. For example, the Ear (1) launched at $99, but since then its price has increased by 50%, to $149. Similarly, the Ear (stick) launched at $99 and now costs $119. We haven’t seen this behavior from any other earphone brand, so any launch price for the Earbuds (2) may be for a limited time only.
All about nothing
For anyone unfamiliar, there is no young brand looking to change the relationship consumers currently have with technology with inspiring and functional product designs that deliver a solid user experience on every level. The goal, according to Nothing’s CEO and co-founder Carl Bay, is to “make technology fun again” and so much more accessible — from unpacking the product for the first time all the way through to the day-to-day experience of use.
We’ll keep you posted on anything that’s released as it is revealed.
