Houston, Texas (KTRK) – If March Madness is won on the respectability polls, the Houston Cougars will look short despite a 22-2 record with a month left before the tournament.
The Coogs rose from No. 3 to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll Monday, but they were unable to defeat the top-seeded Purdue Boilermakers, who lost only their second game of the season against an in-state opponent. Indiana.
Despite this, Coogs was poised to climb the charts with Last Week Team in second placeTennessee lost to Florida and then won only three against Auburn last week.
So what drove the climb? UH defeated Wichita State and recovered a win over Temple – both on the road. But against the temple that Houston defeated Last month, the Coogs had to drill a four-wicket hole in the first half before pulling away in the second half.
Houston received 22 of 62 first-place votes in the AP Poll, compared to Purdue’s 38. Coaches’ poll was a lot closer, though, with #2 UH receiving 13 votes to Purdue’s 15.
Head coach Kelvin Sampson’s team enters the regular season with seven games remaining. Houston only has a game against Tulsa on Wednesday for the next week, before heading to Dallas against SMU on February 16 and then hosting Memphis on February 19. ABC13’s sister networks ESPN2 and ESPN air the SMU and Memphis games, respectively.

Freshman Jarace Walker may hold the keys to the Coogs’ March success. He hasn’t scored fewer than 15 points in his last four games, including 23 scored at Temple.
