Hall of Fame: Texas’ Andre Johnson making it to the Finals is a major achievement, Oilers’ Warren Moon says before revealing class of 2023

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Texas fans who watched Andre Johnson play at NRG Stadium for 12 seasons know a fact: Johnson is a Hall of Fame wide receiver.

The video above is from the 2019 report.

The Miami product racked up over 14,000 rushing yards in his career, which ranks first of all time. His long list of career accomplishments includes seven Pro Bowl teams, and he has been honored twice as an All-Pro.

So why should the number 80 wait for extrapolation? ABC13 asked Oilers legend and Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon to help fans understand two days before the 2023 Hall of Fame class is revealed.

Moon told us Johnson’s biggest hurdle is accumulating wide receivers.

“Unfortunately, there are a lot of receivers who were also waiting for their chance. Guys like Tory Holt and Reggie Wayne and guys like that,” Moon said.

Moon said he respects those great receivers and gives special praise to Johnson.

“What a wonderful reception. What a great ambassador he has been for the city of Houston since his retirement and through his playing days,” he said.

Johnson, Holt, and Wayne all have similar career numbers in yards and touchdown catches. Holt and Wayne have an edge in what is known as the “Job Weighted Approximate Value,” a metric used in Pro Football Reference to measure the career production of eligible Hall of Fame receivers.

Moon said it’s not a matter of “if” but “when” Johnson will find his way to Canton. “If it doesn’t happen to him this year… it will,” he said.

Moon added that reaching the final vote is an achievement in itself. “I don’t worry about him getting (into the Hall of Fame) in the near future,” Moon said.

Texas fans hope it’s Thursday night. But fans who respect Johnson, so much for the player and the man he is, also need to remember players like longtime Packers safety LeRoy Butler.

Last year, he cut induction in his 16th year of eligibility. Butler was a four-time All-Pro fullback who helped Green Bay win the Super Bowl. By design and sometimes just by circumstance, induction into the Professional Football Hall of Fame is difficult.
