Kirby returns to preview Dreamland Deluxe: A Promising Port

On February 24, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe It will release on Nintendo Switch, bringing the beloved Wii platform to a new audience. Nintendo held a special preview event to showcase the game, including some of the new features that will be present in the Switch version. Notably, the Nintendo Treehouse staff focused on one of the game’s new copy capabilities, as well as the new sub-game mode Merry Magoland. Last but not least, the company showed off the new Magolor Epilogue, which features an all-new campaign focused on the character Magolor.

The preview started with a look at Level 3: Onion Ocean. The first thing that caught my eye in the preview was that the level looked really lifelike. The Wii version was no slouch in this department, but the beach location didn’t look like something out of a game that came out over a decade ago. The character designs got a bit of an overhaul, and it looks like they really popped into the game’s backgrounds. Here we also got a chance to see the new Mecha clone ability in action. The ability looks as if it’s going to become a fan favorite, and it also appears to be more sophisticated than typical Kirby powers; A Treehouse employee showed us an in-game manual with five pages describing all the different things Kirby can do with this ability. While Onion Ocean seemed like the perfect place to showcase the ability of the new Sand version, this wasn’t shown during the preview.

Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe It places great emphasis on multiplayer, allowing players to join and exit the game at any point in the campaign. Players who prefer to compete against each other can always check out the new Merry Magoland mode. The mod brings together eight spin-off games from previous Kirby titles, as well as two new games. Our preview event featured a look at “Kirby on the Draw,” a spin-off that debuted in the original Back to dreamland. Given its initial appearance on the Wii, it should come as no surprise that it offers motion controls, but players can also choose button controls, or even touch controls when playing it in handheld mode. Merry Magoland features more than 100 missions to complete through these subgames, and players can do it with friends or on their own.

The coolest thing about Merry Magoland is that it features some fun callbacks to previous Kirby games. Players can unlock stamps by playing sub-games, which can then be used to unlock masks. These masks can be worn by any of the game’s playable characters (even Meta Knight, who actually wears a mask), and represent Kirby favorites, such as Kine from Kirby Dreamland 2. Even better, players can then wear those masks in both Merry Magoland, as well as the main campaign, giving die-hard Kirby fans even more reason to unlock them.

The existence of the Magolor Epilogue was leaked last month, but no additional details were given. Nintendo showed off the mode during our event, and it differs significantly from the main campaign. Instead of playing as Kirby, Meta Knight, Bandana Waddle Dee, or King Dedede, the mode puts players into a Magolor roster. The character seems to handle very differently from the rest of the cast, and also seems to be on a rough patch after the events of the game’s story. The character has lost his powers, and players will have to work to get them back. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t tell us how long Magolor Epilogue would take to complete. The epilogue is unlocked, along with the additional story mode and arena, once the main campaign is complete.

Until now, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe Sounds like a solid addition to the Nintendo Switch library! It doesn’t look as ambitious as last year’s Kirby and the Forgotten Land, but this is to be expected since this is a port. However, for newcomers to the series who have never experienced traditional 2D Kirby gameplay, this may end up being the best option on Switch. The small improvements to the main campaign look great, but the additions of the Merry Magoland and Magolor Epilogue should give Kirby fans a nice incentive to revisit the title. Hopefully, the final product will prove to be fun, but fans can get an idea for themselves today, as a demo of the game has just been released on the Nintendo eShop!
