The new exhibition at The Museum at FIT celebrates hip-hop fashion as the genre’s 50th anniversary

New York City — Gold chains and all things bling are on display in the “Fresh, Fly and Fabulous – Fifty Years of Hip-Hop” exhibit at the Museum at FIT.

The display will feature clothing and accessories worn by the biggest names in the genre including Missy Elliot, LL Cool J, Cardi B and Grandmaster Flash.

The show traces decades of hip-hop style and features iconic looks worn by pioneers of the genre such as the first collaboration with Run DMC and Adidas and the MCM statuette worn by Beyoncé as part of the show.

There are also examples of how hip-hop influences fashion for ordinary people.

“We have a hoop earring box,” said co-curator Elizabeth Way. For women, hoops were a symbol of their power.

The hip-hop style has evolved significantly since 1973, when Clive Campbell, better known as DJ Kool Herc, used turntables to create cool beats and rap on them, marking the birth of hip-hop.

“So many black and brown teens and marginalized communities wanted to be seen,” said co-curator Elena Romero. “And one of the easiest ways to stand out is with what you’re wearing.”

What started as fringe fashion has become a coveted style for luxury brands and red carpet debutants.

“I’m sure those kids in the 1973 Bronx would be amazed at what hip-hop has become,” Way said.

The exhibition will be open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12-8pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10-5pm until April 23rd.
