HOUSTON TRAFFIC: SUV driver killed in fiery accident with 18 wheeler on I-45 North Freeway near Hardy Toll Road

Harris County, Texas (KTRK) – An SUV driver has died after a fiery accident with an 18-wheeler on the I-45 North Freeway in northern Harris County.

All lanes in the outer lanes near the merger with Hardy Toll Road – heading into The Woodlands – reopened hours after the fatal crash was reported at around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the driver of the SUV died after colliding with an 18-wheeler.

An investigator at the scene said the driver of the SUV in the rear is being towed by the 18-wheeler.

Officials suspect the driver may have been speeding when the collision occurred.

Deputies said the SUV was stuck behind the 18-wheeler for some distance before finally breaking free and crashing into the sidewall.

Capt. Anthony McConnell said, “They seem to have stuck together a long way. Then they separated. One went left, the other right.”

The accident caused the SUV to catch fire. The person inside the car was declared dead at the scene.

Now, investigators are working to determine if the SUV driver was drowsy or possibly intoxicated.

Video from the scene shows what remains of the car sitting on the left shoulder of the highway.

Officials said the driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured and remained at the scene.

The deputies said the investigation into the cause of the accident is still ongoing.
