Houston traffic deaths: Brookshire officials believe construction factored into fatal twin crash on I-10 in Waller County

Waller County, Texas (KTRK) – A fatal crash killed two people along I-10 in Brookshire, and a city official believes construction happening in the area is partly to blame.

Brookshire Alderman Jeremiah Hill believes it’s time for a change.

“We need to resolve the situation sooner rather than later so that we don’t cause more of the ongoing deaths or accidents that we are facing,” Hill said.

He said the construction of I-10 near FM 359 was partly to blame for Saturday morning’s crash.

“Unfortunately, we have the lanes that have been narrowed,” Hill said. “We don’t have shoulders in our own, the bar is right in front of Brookshire.”

He called on the Texas Department of Transportation to find a way to reduce speeding in the area and allow for a shoulder cut.

“I don’t think TxDOT has neglected the situation. They’re doing everything they can, they’re contractors to make this area better, and once that’s done, it’s great for everyone, but right now, we’re having issues,” he said.

TxDOT said they have rules and regulations they must follow in any construction area to ensure the safety of drivers and crews.

“Any time we see an area of concern, despite following these safety regulations, our project teams will review the project’s traffic control and signage configuration to see if improvements can be made,” management said in a statement to ABC13. .

The department went on to say that safety is its number one priority and it will do everything possible to ensure safe roads.

The city has reached out to TxDOT, hoping it will bring all parties to the table for a discussion about what changes can be made.

Meanwhile, Hill wants drivers to be vigilant while in the area.

“Slow down. Watch out. Watch out. Stay away from cell phones. If you’re using your cell phone, stay away from it,” he said.

Police said they are still investigating the cause of the accident.
