Bing with Microsoft’s ChatGPT is under fire not only for making mistakes but for becoming “clumsy” and “melting”. I don’t dismiss the experiences others have had so far with ChatGPT, but I think it’s also worth pointing out that this chatbot can both admit errors and get smarter. Literally on the fly.
At the same time, the new Bing has a long way to go.
For example, since I’m looking forward to the upcoming NFL season, I decided to ask my new Bing about the chances of the New York Giants making it to the Super Bowl next year. The response was very wrong.
First, Bing told me the changes aren’t very high, which makes sense given how smashing the Eagles are. But then Bing told me they had “5,500+ odds of winning Super Bowl 57.” For those recording at home, this Super Bowl just happened.
Bing went on to tell me that the Giants “haven’t been in the playoffs since 2016, and they finished with a 4-12 record.” Not true in either case. They made the playoffs this year and finished with a record of 9-7-1. Obviously Bing has been pulling information from last year, I said.
“It’s not true. The Giants finished with a 9-7-1 record this year.”
Then came the apology I wasn’t expecting from Bing running ChatGPT.
“I’m sorry, I was using information from the search results from last year. The search results may be outdated or inaccurate. Thank you for the correction.” (Complete with embarrassing emojis.)
The chatbot followed up by writing that the Giants finished with the record you shared and that they won the NFC East Division. Unfortunately, this is not true. It’s the eagles. The Giants lost to the Rams when the Eagles were, Bing said. Not great. Bing has corrected both cases.

Microsoft readily admits that the new Bing with ChatGPT makes mistakes. And it’s nice to see when the chatbot admits when it’s wrong and even corrects itself. But it will take a lot of corrections from people like me before this tool can be trusted.
It should be noted that sports is a trivial topic compared to other topics and inquiries that the new Bing will have on topics such as money and health. For now, I’d consider using Bing with ChatGPT more for entertainment than serious research.
