An officer with the Temple University Police Department was shot and killed in Philadelphia on Saturday while responding to a robbery, the university said.

The university said in a statement to CBS News that the officer was attempting to arrest a suspect in connection with a store robbery near campus when the shooting occurred.

The university said the officer was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not immediately revealed.

“There are simply no words that can comprehend such a tragedy,” the university said in its statement. “It shreds our sense of community, and wounds even our very soul. Temple has lost an officer and a hero to senseless acts of violence.”

The exact circumstances of the shooting are not yet clear. There was no word on whether any of the suspects were in custody. The university said Philadelphia police were assisting in the investigation.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro tweeted that he and his wife are “devastated for the family of the Temple University police officer who was killed in the line of duty tonight, for bravely serving his community.”
