Star Wars actor slams spin-offs ahead of The Mandalorian season 3 | Movies | entertainment

Star Wars fans have had an abundance of content over the past few years. But instead of blockbuster movies hitting the big screen, the content was TV shows shown on the Disney Plus streaming service. A week from now, Season 3 of Disney’s most popular series, The Mandalorian, will arrive, continuing the story of Din Djarin, Luke Skywalker, and Baby Yoda (Grogu). But Liam Neeson has not become a fan of the series since its transition to the small screen.

Fans will remember Neeson playing the stoic and powerful Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in the first Star Wars prequel: The Phantom Menace. In it, he channeled Ewan McGregor as he played Obi-Wan Kenobi for the first time, and welcomed young Anakin Skywalker to the Jedi universe.

He was killed in the movie, but was just asked if he was coming back – which is bad news. Neeson appeared on Watch What Happens Live! Show with Paul Rudd earlier this month where he was quizzed if he’d be interested in reprising his role as Qui-Gon.

“No, I’m not,” he declared, before explaining that it was the various Star Wars TV shows that put him off the idea of returning.

“There are a lot of spin-offs to Star Wars,” Neeson said. “It dilutes it for me.” He added that the series “Mystery and Magic” was taken away from him in a “strange way” due to various TV programs.

Neeson can only point to a few of the Disney Plus TV shows that have been released in recent years. The Mandalorian is by far the most popular, with an impressive score of 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Likewise, the recently released Andor received incredible reviews once it hit the streaming service. Meanwhile, The Book of Boba Fett was critically panned, with a rotten score of 52 percent. And they didn’t stop there – with the Ahsoka Tano series on its way to the franchise, too.

Despite Neeson’s complaints about the Star Wars series, he’s previously admitted he’d return – on one condition.

Neeson said Character book.com “thought” it would come back: “if it were a movie.”

He added, “Yeah, I’m a little snooty when it comes to TV, I have to admit. I love the big screen, you know? Qui-Gon — I can’t believe it’s been 24 years since we made Phantom Menace — I can’t believe where the time has gone.”

“It was an amazing experience, shooting this movie in London,” he added, recalling filming The Phantom Menace.

Neeson previously made a cameo appearance in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. During Rey Skywalker’s final battle against the Emperor, she summons the Force ghosts of all the former Jedi Knights – including Qui-Gon Jin. At this moment, fans could hear his voice helping Rei in her fight.

However, it’s not too late for the former Jedi Knight to return to the series. Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill returns as a Jedi warrior in 2017’s The Last Jedi – 34 years after his previous appearance in 1983’s Return of the Jedi.

Luke’s story didn’t end there either. The never-age Hamill makes a triumphant return in the final episode of The Mandalorian season 2 when he saves Grogu from the Dark Soldiers.

He returns again in The Book of Boba Fett mid-season while helping Din Djarin.

The Star Wars franchise is available to watch on Disney Plus now.
