Fort Bend County announces a project to preserve the African American Historic Site near Kendleton

Fort Bend County, Texas (KTRK) – Fort Bend County announced a major investment Monday morning with plans to preserve and honor the area’s African American history.

A new public park and memorial approaches a historic site at Bates M. Allen Memorial Park near Kendleton, which was one of the first liberated towns in Texas.

It was some of these freedmen who created a community in the area, and some are buried at the site.

The new project will preserve these graves and also celebrate the strength and perseverance of African American communities.

Some of the features include historic cemeteries, walking trails, Juneteenth Square, and a memorial.

The initial investment is $4 million. The announcement comes as Black History Month comes to an end.

The money comes from the county’s parks department and will also revitalize an almost forgotten area.

Design plans are still a work in progress, but the hope is that construction will begin by the end of the year and that the first phase will be completed in the next five years.
