Liverpool, Texas (KTRK) – A manhunt in Brazoria County ended in the fatal shooting of a suspect who was initially found in a Lake Jackson elementary school dumpster, according to Lake Jackson police.
Just before 10 a.m. Thursday, Lake Jackson police responded to a call regarding a man inside a dumpster at OM Robert’s Elementary School.
Just before the officers arrived, the man reportedly stole a truck from someone nearby.
A chase ensued that led the officers through several state highways and county roads, according to police.
Police said the suspect eventually rammed into a civilian and a police vehicle, then attempted to run over an officer.
That’s when DPS officials deployed spikes, causing the suspect to crash into a ditch. The chase ended just before 11 a.m. on Interstate 35 at County Road 192.
When officers approached the vehicle, they said the suspect got out and charged two officers with a large blade knife found at the scene, according to police. In response, the officers shot the suspect to death.
Amelia Martinez, who was across the street at Dollar General and witnessed the incident and shooting, questions the police account.
“I didn’t see a gun or nothing. There were multiple people who said the same thing. They didn’t see a big gun, or whatever they said,” Martinez said.
Corina Resendez was also an eyewitness. She can’t believe the man accused the deputies based on what she saw since he just crashed into a ditch.
She said, “The way he was tilted, there’s no way he could get out and start charging. He was dunked down maybe it looks like that, but he was falling off.”
The identity of the suspect has not been revealed.
The Lake Jackson officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation. The Texas Rangers are investigating this shooting, but have not yet contacted witnesses.
SkyEye video captured the scene, as a white sheet of paper was placed over the suspect’s body.
