Houston, Texas (KTRK) – The Houston ISD state takeover could happen as soon as Monday, and many are waiting to see if that happens.
Mayor Sylvester Turner told ABC13 last week that the takeover could happen on Monday.

Turner said state officials would not confirm or deny taking over the area. The Texas Education Agency told us on Friday that they have no updates on this issue, so we’re waiting for now.
The possibility of a state takeover of the area has loomed since 2019. At the time, the board was under fire and schools were failing, but officials say things have changed.
Superintendent Millard House II said the condition of the schools is strong, past issues have been resolved, and fewer schools are in trouble.
Many local leaders widely condemned the idea of a state takeover.
“The issues the TEA had with HISD in 2019 are no longer applicable in 2023. HISD is a school district moving up. Wheatley High School is no longer failing, the school board has found the TEA an issue that no longer exists,” Harris County Judge Lena said. Hidalgo in a statement.
Turner spoke to us about the potential acquisition last week, saying if TEA isn’t going to acquire the region, it should say so.
“To create this uncertainty, especially at a time when children are about to take their exams, is not fair to the students, or to the teachers, or to the parents, and quite frankly to that community either,” Turner said.
The NAACP holds a community information meeting for parents, teachers, and civic leaders in an effort to stop a state takeover of the area. It will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays at North Main Church of God in Christ.
