Oscars 2023: Ke Huy Quan, winner of Best Supporting Actor in ‘Everything Everywhere All at One,’ Makes Family in Houston Proud

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – It was a big night for Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan.

Quan won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Everything Everywhere at Once.”

In an interview after the Academy Awards, Kwan talked about his acting journey, and how he almost gave up his acting career and achieved his American dream thanks to his family.

On Monday, ABC13 spoke with members of the Kwan family, who are still emotional.

Melody, Ke Huy Quan’s niece, said, “Oh, I cried!

Melody Kwan told Eyewitness News that the whole family is very proud of him.

Some of them even traveled from Houston to Los Angeles to show their support.

“We’re very proud of him. We’ve always seen his old movies, and we waited for his time to shine,” said Melody Kwan.

Her father, who is one of the two Oscar-winners’ siblings, owns a business here in Houston.

Melody Kwan said her uncle’s rise to prominence was not always easy.

At one point, she recalls, her family members offered him work at family-owned companies based here in Houston when he was struggling to get back into Hollywood.

“There was a time when he was helping out in restaurants for one of our aunts, and my dad had a bag business, they had other business ventures, and they wanted to know if he wanted to do anything else here,” said Melody Kwan. .

For Melody, her uncle’s win Sunday night has not only become an important victory and a source of pride for her family, but also for the Asian community.

“It’s really a great moment for us, the Asian community and any minorities,” Melody Kwan said.
