HISD Takeover: Parents are sending the same message in response to the Texas Education Agency’s decision to take over the district

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – While many state and local leaders were awaiting the Texas Education Agency’s decision, some Houston ISD parents had no idea what was going on but had a message for the new future leaders.

State education leaders said that when students return from spring break, nothing will look different. The teachers will still be there, as well as the superintendent and school board.

By the next academic year, it may be different now that TEA has decided to take on new supervisors and principals.

“I can’t believe it,” said Stephanie Arizmendi’s mother. “I’m in shock. I was looking forward to them not taking over, but to hear this is really shocking.”

“It’s like a win-win situation,” said mother Shari Cooper.

“It is my hope that they make the best decisions for us and more generally for our students and teachers regarding what goes on in the School Board,” said parent Brittany Jones.

The TEA’s decision sparked a lot of backlash, mostly from educational leaders and politicians, but it didn’t generate much buzz from the parents ABC13 spoke to.

“I saw some posts about it on your partner’s Instagram, but I didn’t really care,” said Maria Lopez, who has family members registered with HISD.

“I don’t know,” Cooper said. “I really don’t know. You’ll have to explain.”

If you’re a parent, here’s what you need to know. Taking over does not mean that your student’s teacher will leave.

It comes down to who runs the area, and there will likely be a new supervisor.

There will also be a board of directors that is appointed rather than elected. This, however, may not last forever.

State leaders have said they intend to hand over control to the Board of Trustees as soon as possible. No matter who’s in charge, parents want the same.

“Our children need a great education,” Armendi explained. “They need parents to be able to have a say in what they want. Just go gentle, I guess.”

“(As long as) no matter what, my child is getting the best education,” said Katrina Bello’s mother. “Who’s in charge – just make sure that’s the priority. That’s all that matters.”

TEA knows that parents may have questions about what’s going to happen. That’s why she planned four Information sessions This month, with the first taking place next Tuesday.

The country is still working out where and when this will happen.
