Shadow and Bone showrunner Eric Heisserer discusses adapting multiple books in Season 2 (EXCLUSIVE)

The Grishaverse is back. after two years , Shadow and bones It’s back on Netflix for its massive second installment. After adapting the first season of the novel of the same name as well as the first book of the sequel series Six crowsSeason 2 takes the events from Leigh Bardugo’s Siege and storm Beside ruin and revivalwhile also sprinkling in the elements Crooked kingdom. While die-hard book fans may know the general direction the Netflix series is heading in, Shadow and bonesThe deliberate manipulation of time makes the show as unpredictable as possible.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Shadow and bones Showrunner Eric Heisserer noted that the priority is to stay true to the source material, but they still wanted to tinker with the chronology a bit to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

“It’s basically like a parallel universe to what the books established, and in part, it comes from the necessity of having elements that don’t end up in translation,” Heisserer said. “The things we do, we do our best first and foremost, to maintain aesthetic fidelity to the source material. When we have to move away from that, it has to be backed up with as much canon information as possible so that it still feels like we’re in Leigh’s world. And that’s why, I think. That the changes we’re making might be enough to keep fans in suspense and not knowing where we’re going, while also learning about certain milestones or important milestones happening in the series.”

Some of this chronological manipulation comes with the quick introduction of characters like Wylan, who doesn’t even appear Six crows duology. Wylan fits naturally into Kaz Brekker’s crew, while rookie trio Nikolai, Tolya, and Tamar are inserted into Alina Starkov’s story.

“Fortunately, the path for them is pretty much built into these books,” Heisserer said. “We had that as a great starting point and we just had to see how that might work with the story we had developed with the Crows this season, and how we integrated Sturmhond and Nikolai. Along with the characters we had carried over from season one, the writers and I quickly realized we had Lots of mouths to feed and it was really about striking that balance and making sure each character got as much attention as we could give them.”

Besides the new character class, Heisserer and company had the luxury of playing with animated title cards and map sequences in Season 2.

“The map interstitials were something we wanted to use in Season 1 but didn’t have the budget for, so when we got some extra breathing space in Season 2, that was the first thing we wanted to try and address and I’m really excited about that,” Heisserer said. Cartography is very close to Alina’s heart and a part of that world, a way for people to take in where everything is and get a sense of the geography in a way they couldn’t otherwise. Furthermore, the geography changes a little bit this season and it was nice to be able to notice that on the map.”

Shadow and bones Season 2 is Streaming now on Netflix.
