What is the vernal equinox?

Equinox is derived from the Latin word for “equal night”. According to AccuWeather.

During the equinox, the Earth is positioned so that its axis and orbit are perpendicular to the sun, allowing the sun’s rays to point directly at our planet’s equator. As a result, day and night are 12 hours long around the world.

The vernal, or spring, equinox was the first of two for the year: the autumnal, or fall, equinox would occur on 2:50 a.m. ET on Saturday, September 23rd.

On the contrary, solstices refer to the sharper time differences between night and day. In the year 2023, the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, will occur at 10:58 a.m. ET on Wednesday, June 21. The upper half of the world will experience the shortest day in 2023 during the winter solstice 10:27 p.m. ET on Thursday, December 21st.
