Not only will all iPhone 15 models get Dynamic Island according to the rumors, but it will also be an updated version of the one used by the iPhone 14 Pro, according to the analyst. Ming Chi Kuo (Opens in a new tab).
The updated Dynamic Island proximity sensor, which is there to tell the iPhone to turn off the screen when you raise the phone to your face for a call, won’t live under the screen outside the island, as it does on the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Instead, it would be teleported inside the island, but presumably without making the pill and hole-shaped apertures larger.
It looks like this sensor will give Dynamic Island any new capabilities in its own right. However, updates in this area may indicate that Apple is reworking other related components as well, which may have a greater impact on users.
And Kuo’s claim that Apple’s suppliers swapped some of these parts lends some weight to that idea as well.
Apple will also change the iPhone 15’s proximity sensors from the iPhone 14’s 1380nm wavelength models to 940nm wavelength models, Kuo says. It doesn’t say if this has any benefit for the user, but that’s also apparently due to the sensors being moved.
This change is very noticeable because the rumor mill currently believes that all iPhone 15 models will use Dynamic Island. Not just the most expensive Pro models. Barring possible updates to the iPhone SE, this year may see the end of the popular iPhone Face ID.
The biggest changes are believed to be happening elsewhere on the iPhone 15 series. This may also be the first iPhone to use a USB-C charging port instead of Lightning, and the first to use titanium side rails in the case of the Pro models. A new A17 Bionic chip, more curved edges, a brighter screen, and unfortunately, rumors of a price increase have also been reported.
We likely won’t find out if any of these iPhone 15 rumors, leaks, or analyst claims are true until September, Apple’s usual launch month for new iPhones.
