iOS 17 seems to be worth getting excited about, even if until recently it could have been considered a fairly iterative update.
The upcoming iPhone update, apparently known internally as “Dawn,” started as a “mod release,” but has since morphed into something more ambitious, according to Mark Gorman In the subscriber’s edition of Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter.
Rather than minor improvements, iOS 17 supposedly “boasts many more “nice” features, including “many of the most requested by users.”
Gurman doesn’t say what these features are, but he says none of them are “a pillar of support” like the customizable lock screens that were intended for iOS 16.
iOS 16 was a huge update packed with new games like lock screen customization and unsend options for emails, texts, and live activities. As a result, a lot of software bugs and quirks were introduced, which Apple seems hopeful with iOS 17 to address. Hopefully, these issues can now be fully addressed if Apple developers feel comfortable enough to start introducing more features into the mix.
What can iOS 17 add?
Rumors about iOS 17 features have been limited so far. Sources claimed that Apple shifted its focus away from new iOS features so employees could work on the Apple AR/VR headset and its new operating system.
The only possible addition made by the Leak-o-sphere is Apple allowing third-party app stores to run in iOS for the first time, which could have a huge impact on what apps you download on your iPhone, and how you interact with them.
Apple usually presents new operating systems for its products every year at WWDC, so it must be WWDC 2023 when we hear the first official iOS 17 news. It should then go through a few months of closed and public beta testing before getting a stable release alongside the iPhone 15, which should happen in September.
Moving on to previous iPhone compatibility with previous iOS versions, we expect the list of supported devices from iOS 17 to include models from iPhone X onwards.
