iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro could give up the same feature in Europe that Apple decided to remove from the entire iPhone 14 series in the US
According to a new report by the French website McGeneration (Opens in a new tab)iPhone 15 models without a physical SIM card slot will be launched in France this year. And as you mentioned Mac rumors (Opens in a new tab)It is possible that the SIM tray will be removed in other European countries as well.
Is this the big deal? Apple has moved to eSIMs for iPhone 14 models in America, and we’ve found them to be very easy to use when setting up our phones. An eSIM stores your carrier information digitally on your iPhone, which Apple says reduces the risk of damage, loss, or theft.
In addition, you can install eight or more eSIMs on your iPhone and use two numbers at the same time. For example, you can use one eSIM for personal calls and the other for business calls.
iPhone 15: Why use eSIM in Europe now?
Still, there’s a reason Apple didn’t release eSIM support in Europe first. It is very common for people to pick up a new SIM card for their phone when they travel to a different country. And there is a much higher level of convenience when swapping SIM cards there.
However, one of our correspondents tried traveling with an eSIM on a trip to France and Italy, and found the experience counterintuitive. I also found it easy to switch networks. You can also customize the naming of your various active fonts so it’s easy to keep track of which ones.
To make things easier, there are apps like Airalo (Opens in a new tab) for iOS and Android makes it easy to choose eSIM plans on the go. There is, too Holafly (Opens in a new tab).
Another reason Apple could make this move with the upcoming iPhone 15 release is that more carriers seem to be adopting this feature. According to Apple’s website, for example, five British carriers support some form of eSIM activation on the iPhone, including EE, O2, Truphone, Ubigi, and Vodafone.
Other big changes in the iPhone 15
The SIM tray isn’t the only thing Apple leaves on the cutting room floor. The biggest dropped feature is rumored to be the Lightning port, as the iPhone 15 is widely expected to have a USB-C port instead. That’s good news, but we’ve also heard that Apple may decide to reserve the fastest charging and transfer speeds for Apple-certified USB-C cables.
Also on the chopping block? These could be physical buttons, as the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max tend to use tactile buttons instead. The volume buttons can become a volume rocker and the mute switch can become a button.
Other notable iPhone 15 upgrades include the Dynamic Island for all four models, which means the end of the notch. But the iPhone 15 Pro is poised for the biggest upgrades, including a titanium design, a periscope zoom camera and a faster and more efficient A17 Bionic chip.
