The Spring Branch Independent School District is moving to speed book bans rather than community backlash

Harris County, Texas (KTRK) – On Monday, the Spring Branch ISD School Board voted to speed up the book’s ban in the district.

A 4-3 vote removes the first two layers of the book review process, meaning they’ll move on to the third and final review, the only stage that includes board input.

“You’re speeding up the process,” said Dr. Mark Jones, a professor of political science at Rice University.

Nathalie Herpin, Spring Branch ISD Parent and Director Families 4 per child, the Political Action Committee, spoke to ABC13 and said more than 40 books were submitted for review this academic year. A far cry from the eight presented in 2022 and the zero presented in 2021.

“If there’s a particular book that I, as a parent, don’t want my child to read, it’s between me, as the parent, and my child. It’s not between me and the school. I don’t have the right to remove a book for an entire school or a district,” said Dr. Margaret Hill of the University of Houston College of Education. Entirely based on my feelings about the book.”

Parents and activists like Hale have put forward several books submitted for reconsideration.

“It’s important to be able to question when we see something that worries us, but I think it’s important to teach our kids critical thinking skills,” she said.

A list shared with ABC13 by a region spokesperson shows titles submitted for review, including “Magic Treehouse: Dragon of the Red Dawn” and “Dog Man: A Tale of Two Kitties.”

Sources tell ABC13 they believe harmless readings are being submitted for review to shut down the system, prompting the vote on Monday night.

“For every action, there is a reaction, and so the push to start banning the books has also given rise to adversaries who want to keep the books there,” Jones said.
