3 people rescued from under a bridge in the city center due to high water levels

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Three people were rescued from rising waters in downtown Houston after heavy rainstorms last night.

ABC13 was there as Houston Fire Department crews pulled rescue trucks and the tower ladder to help people stuck in the water.

People were sleeping under the bridge at Franklin and Smith when they got trapped.

Since the water in the bay was moving quickly, there might be debris, and it was still dark, the HFD didn’t rescue them with the boat. Instead, the firefighters lowered the ladder into the water, where everyone climbed to safety.

Jerry Cates, one of the homeless people rescued, told ABC13 he felt “very grateful. Very blessed.”

“It was raining all night. It was very bad,” Kates said, adding that the water rose very quickly.

HFD District Chief Hunter Schappaugh said the fire department has had to conduct rescues at this location before when the waters were higher, forcing people to find something to cling to or sit on the rails.

Beyond that rescue, Shabo said crews didn’t see any more problems overnight in the downtown area, but his teams remained on standby just in case.

“People tend to underestimate the power of water, in their cars, in situations like this. The whole ‘turn around, don’t drown’ mantra seems comical, (but) it can’t reinforce it enough. Six to eight inches of water,” Shabu said, pointing This area was also under water during Hurricane Harvey.
