Jose Paredes detained ICE collects bond for allegedly shooting and killing childhood friend Samuel Mata along the Beltway

Harris County, Texas (KTRK) – The man accused of shooting and killing his friend is back in custody despite posting $250,000 bail on Tuesday.

ABC13 has learned that 22-year-old Jose Paredes is being held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), so he did not appear in court on Wednesday morning.

In probable cause court, it is revealed that Paredes is not a US citizen but is from Mexico.

The video showed that since he was in federal custody, only his attorneys had appeared, along with possible Paredes family members.

The judge ruled that Paredes’ previous bond was insufficient and raised it from $250,000 to $500,000.

Paredes posted his initial pledge on Tuesday but was not out of custody long before he was taken into custody by ICE.

The accident occurred on Monday morning when 23-year-old Samuel Mata was driving along the eastern road with Paredes.

Mata’s family told ABC13 that they had known each other since elementary school.

In court, it was revealed that the men went out to a pub and house party on Sunday night early the next morning.

This is when at least two shots were fired, allegedly by Paredes, who was in the passenger seat.

A deputy who saw Matta’s truck crash on the highway said Paredes had a gun in his hand when he approached the vehicle. Paredes allegedly pointed the gun at the deputy, attempting to fire it – but it did not go off.

The prosecutor shared more of what Paredes told investigators, saying he denied owning a gun.

“He denied owning a handgun, carrying or using a firearm,” said Toyanette Wallace of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. “Police were able to see a gunshot wound to (Mata’s) right cheek and found two casings in the car.” .

Paredes will have to settle the booking with ICE before he likely returns to Harris County, where he’ll stay until he can post more money for the growing bond.
