TEA gives the first update regarding the HISD acquisition one month after the decision

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – The Texas Education Agency shared an update at the district board meeting Thursday for the first time since it decided to acquire the Houston Charter School District.

According to TEA’s director of media relations, the presentation was about where the process is and where they are in regards to selecting a new board of directors.

The presentation has been scheduled in an open session for community members to attend and listen to.

Many were frustrated at not hearing these matters from TEA Commissioner Mike Morath.

ABC13 has confirmed that he will not be the one doing the presentation. Instead, Steve Lesholop, deputy commissioner of TEA, will oversee governance.

And as far as the board goes, as of April 6, the original application deadline, TEA says it has 374 total applicants, 345 of whom live within the confines of HISD, which is a requirement.

According to TEA, 232 of these applications came from parents of current or former HISD students, and 238 of those who applied work as teachers and/or in a school system.

ABC13 has confirmed with TEA that it will continue to accept applications for the Board of Directors through April 20.

Also, something that was discussed during Thursday’s meeting is a decision in which the board proposes that the TEA choose one of two people to lead the transition from local governance to TEA taking over.

The two men on the agenda are Alton Frailey, who retired as supervisor of Katy ISD in 2016, and AJ Crabill, who was in charge of TEA’s acquisition of DeSoto ISD in 2020.
