Homes slide off a cliff in Utah Valley, prompting evacuations

Six months after a Utah building official issued a notice revoking certificates of occupancy and demanded the eviction of two homes in Draper, both homes collapsed due to a slide, city officials said Saturday.

An October 2022 notice declared both homes unfit for habitation and human occupancy due to hazardous conditions, which were related to a land shift causing slide and foundation fractures in the homes.

Early Saturday morning, after the two homes collapsed, engineers, building officials, and public safety personnel were on the site and decided to evacuate two additional homes—one on each side of the vacated homes— According to a social media post from Draper City officials. Officials say residents of these homes have been notified, and their homes are being evacuated.

Other homes in the area may also be evacuated for safety reasons.

A collapsed home slid onto the trail, closing Ann’s Trail for public use. People are told to avoid the path due to the dangerous conditions.

“Our thoughts are with the concerned homeowners. We are grateful everyone is safe,” the post read.
