Jalen Randle murder: Grand jury takes no action against Houston police officer Shane Previtt, charged with murder of 29

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – The case of Jalen Randle, a 29-year-old shot dead by Houston police, will be brought to a new grand jury after the last panel took no action on Wednesday, according to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

The video above is from a previous report.

The DA’s office said the grand jury has not taken action on potential charges against HPD Officer Shane Privette in the April 2022 shooting of Randle.

“It is the policy of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to submit all shootings involving an officer to a grand jury to determine whether probable cause exists to support criminal charges,” the DA’s office wrote in a statement. Harris County grand juries consist of 12 randomly selected county residents who hear all available evidence in the case, including witnesses.

Usually, if nine or more grand juries agree that there is probable cause, they issue a “true bill” or indictment, and the case continues through the criminal justice system. In other cases, if nine or more jurors decide that there is no probable cause, they pass a “no bill.”

But in this case, the jury took no action, meaning the case was not resolved and re-admitted to a subsequent grand jury, the DA’s office said.

Randall was shot and killed on April 27, 2022. At the time, police said they were trying to execute an arrest warrant for Randall, who was accused of aggravated assault on a family member.

Body camera video released in 2022 showed Previte opening fire once he told Randall to show his hands, then uttering an expletive after the shooting.

Since that day, Randel’s family has demanded that Previtt face criminal charges.
