Mississippi escaped prisoners: Jerry Raines, 1 of 4 Hinds County escapees, captured on video at Katy Freeway store in Hedwig Village

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Law enforcement believes that as many as three Mississippi prison escapees may be in the Houston area. One was caught on camera.

On Wednesday, Hinds County, Mississippi, Sheriff Terry Jones released a surveillance photo of fugitive Jerry Raines inside a service station Sunday morning. Jones said the location was Spring Valley, but ABC13 confirmed that the address is actually 9303 Katy Freeway, which is Hedwig Village.

The photo is the first publicly confirmed photo of a fugitive in the Houston area. Law enforcement suspected at least one of the men may be in the area, after the Hinds County public works truck they used as a getaway vehicle was found under the I-10 corridor and upper Campbell Road around 11 a.m. Sunday. The surveillance photo of Raynes was taken around the same time.

A gas station employee told ABC13 that she remembered the man.

“He came holding his face,” she said. The employee added that he was acting “strange”, appearing to be injured, and asked her if she knew where the nearest hospital was.

Raines is one of four men who escaped from the Hinds County Detention Center late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Raines, along with Dylan Arrington, Casey Grayson, and Corey Harrison, is believed to have climbed a hole in the prison’s roof.

Jones said he did not know if Grayson and Harrison traveled to the Houston area with Raines.

On Wednesday, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez tweeted that Raines “may be in the Houston area.” He added that “although there is no indication that Raines was armed or violent, great care must be taken.” The Law Enforcement Bulletin described him as an “extreme escape risk” with a “history of escape”.

“I had firearms, and I was prepared. I was making sure I knew their faces,” said Tanya Lyons, who lives in the Spring Branch area. “Everyone is safe and watch out. Tell your neighbors, check your neighbors and spread the word.”

On Wednesday evening, Jones confirmed that Arrington was killed in a shootout with law enforcement Wednesday morning at a Lake County home. The home, located northeast of Jackson, Mississippi, caught fire during a shootout. A Lake County detective was wounded in the crossfire and is expected to be okay.

Arrington is also suspected of killing 61-year-old Reverend Anthony Watts and stealing his pickup truck Monday night in Jackson, Mississippi. Law enforcement believes Watts has stopped to help Arrington, who crashed a stolen motorcycle when he was kidnapped and shot multiple times.
