Lower Manhattan – Pop star Ed Sheeran didn’t copy “Let’s Get It On” when he wrote “Thinking Out Loud,” a jury found Thursday.

Sitting at the defense table in a suit and tie between his attorneys, Sheeran hugged his attorney when the verdict was read.

The jury reached its decision after nearly three hours of deliberation.

The trial included testimony from Sheeran himself, who occasionally sang and played guitar arguing that the chord progression on “Thinking Out Loud” is common and not owned by any musician.

However, the chord progressions and building blocks in Sheeran’s song are used frequently, and did not appear first on “Let’s Get It On”, as Sheeran’s attorney said earlier in the trial.

“Let’s Get It On” has been heard in countless movies and commercials and has racked up hundreds of millions in streams, spins, and radio plays since its introduction in 1973.

Thinking Out Loud won the 2016 Grammy Award for Song of the Year.
