The custom hat maker draws on Chicano culture for inspiration

Boyle Heights, California – Located in a convenience store just below the Sixth Street Bridge, between the Downtown LA Arts District and Boyle Heights, Pachuco Supply produces unique, tailored hats for fans of Chicano and Pachuco culture. Small business founder Gilberto Marquez started out making hats for himself. But when his creations caught the interest of friends, and eventually Instagram followers, he knew he had something special.

“I’m not a great painter or tattoo artist or anything like that, so my canvas is a felt hat,” said Marquis. “Pachuco culture for me is style as resistance. It’s pride and self-care.”

His clients include the likes of actor Edward James Olmos, civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, Madonna and the music group La Santa Cecilia.
