WWE officially named 12 entrants to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on Sunday. That list includes Seth Rollins, Austin Theory, AJ Styles, Bobby Lashley, Finn Balor, Rey Mysterio, Edge, Damien Priest, The Miz, Sheamus, Shinsuke Nakama and Cody Rhodes. The tournament will begin Monday Night Raw This week with a pair of triple threat matches featuring the aforementioned six superstars (Rollins, Rhodes, Priest, Bálor, The Miz, Nakamura).
The winner of those two matches will face off later in the night and the winner of that match will represent Raw in the finals of the tournament at Night of Champions On May 27th. The process would repeat itself on SmackDown with Theory, Styles, Lashley, Edge, Sheamus, and Mysterio.
Rhodes gave his initial thoughts on the World Heavyweight Championship last week during an interview with ComicBook. While winning the championship wouldn’t end his “story” of pursuing the WWE Championship, he’s not outright against the idea of winning it.
“This is the title that stands for Raw. This is the title that stands for the main events of Raw. This is the title that stands for the franchise title for USA Network. So I can’t say I don’t want that. I can’t say that that’s not a thing, if you look And I reviewed your goals and said, “Okay, that’s the way to go. Especially with my work on Monday Night RAW, and that might be more like my case as you just told a story, a different story,” Rhodes said.
He added, “The goal is still the same for me, but in no way am I or anyone should be looking forward to a new World Series because it’s one of those things that I think people will love and revere at the right time.” “It’s positioned as a headliner for the brand itself and it’s going to take a lead person to do that and handle it, and Raw has a stacked slate, so I definitely want to put myself in the mix.”
