Washington – Federal prosecutors have charged Rep. George Santos of New York, two sources familiar with the matter confirmed to CBS News.

CNN It was first to report that federal prosecutors had filed charges against the Republican congressman, though the exact nature of the alleged criminal violations is unclear.

Santos was elected to New York’s 3rd congressional district last November, but has spent most of his time in Congress under scrutiny by state and federal prosecutors, after fabricated aspects of his background were revealed.
