Officials said two men were bitten by sharks in two separate incidents in South Florida last week.
A 35-year-old man who was fishing from a pier on Summerland Key, an island in the Florida Keys, was bitten in the foot by a shark, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday. The shark reportedly came out of the water and was on the pier when it bit the fisherman on Friday around 8 p.m
The man was taken to hospital for treatment. Officials did not specify his condition.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said a 20-year-old man was bitten in the leg by a shark Thursday afternoon in Marathon, which is also located in the Florida Keys. He was attacked while spearfishing with two other people.
Officials said the man was taken ashore in a private boat. He was then picked up by a helicopter and taken to a Miami hospital for treatment. Officials also did not specify his condition.
The man, identified by CBS Miami as Kevin Blanco, said he was bite twice.
“I just see a big gray figure of him there, and I see him every time I close my eyes,” Blanco said. “It was a bull shark, maybe nine to ten feet long, maybe about 500 pounds.”
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife CommissionIt is very rare for someone to be bitten by a shark in Florida waters. The agency said the bites are rarely life-threatening. Only about a dozen of the more than 300 species of sharks in the world were involved Attacks on humansaccording to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
