a U-Haul crashes in Lafayette Square near the White House; arrested driver

The Secret Service said a U-Haul truck crashed through security barriers around Lafayette Square across the street from the White House Monday night. The truck driver has been arrested.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement that the incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m.

“There were no casualties in the ranks of any secret service or members of the White House, and the cause and manner of the crash is still under investigation,” Guglielmi said. Road closures are in effect and pedestrian walkways are closed during the investigation.

Authorities did not immediately identify the driver and it was not clear if the crash was intentional.

Law enforcement officials can be seen checking the truck. Shortly after 11pm, the back of the van opened and it appeared that robots were being used to try and determine if there was anything dangerous inside.

This is a developing story. It will be updated as more information becomes available.
