Pope Francis delivers his blessing as he attends the world’s first meeting of “Educational Eco-Cities” promoted by the “Scholas Occurrentes” in the Vatican.

The Vatican said Pope Francis missed meetings on Friday because he was suffering from a fever.

There were no details about the extent of Francis’ illness. The last time he had a serious fever, in March, the 86-year-old Pope was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with acute bronchitis. He was given intravenous antibiotics and released after three days.

A Vatican official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the pope’s health, said Francis did not greet anyone in the audience Friday “because of a feverish state.”

There was no formal audience scheduled for Friday, but Francis keeps a separate, private, and informal schedule of meetings with the people he receives at his residence.

Francis had a busy week, presiding over a meeting of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, participating in a Thursday afternoon reunion with his Scholas Occurentes, as well as meeting many other bishops and visiting dignitaries.

He is scheduled to officiate Sunday’s Pentecost mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, and in a sign that he is expected to recover quickly, the Vatican announced on Friday a new official meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, scheduled for Monday.
