The animated DC Universe is heading into a new era, as James Gunn and Peter Safran recently stepped in as co-CEOs of DC Studios. During their tenure, Gunn and Safran are developing a number of films and Max-exclusives, the first 10 of which were publicly revealed earlier this year. As DC fans will likely attest, there’s no shortage of options for characters who can just join the universe – but there has been some flop and speculation surrounding The Terrifics. The team, which is a more recent addition to DC’s arsenal, was teased by Gunn on social media earlier this spring, and rumors suggest that Mister Terrific may end up appearing in the series. Superman: Legacy. So, who are The Terrifics, and how can they (hypothetically) fit into the DCU?
Who are the Terrifics from DC?
Created by Jeff Lemire and Evan Reis in 2018 masterpieces #1, The Terrifics is a nexus between Mr. Fantastic, Phantom Girl, Metamorpho, and Plastic Man. Originally a send-up to Marvel’s Fantastic Four, the four previously single heroes accidentally meet and bond together in the Dark Multiverse.
As a group, fight a cybernetic version of the Ten Strikes in Egypt, stop the time-traveling Bizarro from destroying the past and the future, and go through a choose-your-own-adventure story, and other crazy adventures. masterpieces The book also became a second home to oft-forgotten characters like Tom Strong, Man-Bat, and Blue Beetle.
How could The Terrifics fit into the DCU?
On paper, given the amount of space the new DCU has to cover, The Terrifics may not feel like a shoehorn in the early installments of the franchise. But this sense of flop is nothing new in the franchise’s past and future – Gunn’s Suicide Squad It actually featured an incredibly specific group of comically obscure characters, with peace maker Do the same on a smaller scale. Weaving The Terrifics into the DCU, even individually, would introduce more wacky, character-driven lore, and make the fictional world feel bigger as a result. As decades of comics have proven, each member of The Terrifics can function just fine as a standalone hero, with every member of the team (outside of Phantom Girl) having a running title at one point or another. It doesn’t seem like any of the team could play a supporting role in anything the DCU has in store.
Beyond that, even on a symbolic level, bringing The Terrifics into live-action in the new DCU could reflect what the franchise prioritizes – a world that’s respectful of the comics, unique, and unabashedly weird. Ultimately, showing the team as a fully formed alliance of likable characters could help flesh out the sci-fi and wacky parts of the DCU, unlike how Gunn introduced Guardians of the Galaxy to the MCU. Sure, the Terrifics are a far cry from familiar names – but in the DCU fold, their madcap adventures could easily be legendary. (Plus, let’s be honest – given the team’s roots, it would be funny if The Terrifics could somehow appear in a live-action event long before Marvel’s tenure Fantastic Four Reboot arriving in 2025 or later.)
