A dog eats feces that turned out to be opioid-tainted human feces at Fort Mason in San Francisco, California

San Francisco — A California dog owner has warned other pet owners in the city about what happened to her dog, Pockets, after she became ill from ingesting human excrement tainted with marijuana and opiates at a San Francisco park.

As seen in the adorable videos posted by her owner Jackie Sheppard, Pockets is a 1-year-old Himalayan Sheepdog Poodle mix who loves the outdoors. One video shows the furry tusk frolicking in the sand at Clapp Beach and another hanging out of a car window, the wind blowing through its tanned fur.

Shepard and Pockets were enjoying the great outdoors in Fort Mason on Thursday when Pockets decided to have a bite to eat a little…junk.

“I noticed she was eating something, so I ran to see what she was eating, and unfortunately, it was poop,” Shepherd says.

It wasn’t until several hours later that Shepard noticed something was very wrong.

“At about eight o’clock in the morning, she was wiggling, her tail pointing downward. Something was definitely wrong with her.”

Documents from emergency care showed she had pockets of symptoms of marijuana intoxication and there were opioids in her system—scary enough on its own, but something else was alarming.

“Basically, the doctor told me that night that this is a relatively common occurrence, and she’s seeing him a few times a week,” Shepherd says.

Dog owners in Fort Mason were understandably shocked by the news.

“This is horrible. This is my worst nightmare. I don’t know how anyone could have prevented that,” says Yacine Darbani, who was in the garden with Mayle.

Fortunately, documents show that Pockets didn’t catch on enough to need Narcan, and Shepard is glad her pet is back to her old stick-chewing self.

A healthcare professional told sister station ABC7 News San Francisco that if Shepard had done everything right and had the dose been larger, Sinus could have suffered kidney or liver damage.

Shepherd says she will keep a close eye on her pet from now on and hopes her story will encourage others to do the same.

“There are a lot of people who have dogs who probably don’t know this is a threat to their dogs, so I wanted to get involved to spread awareness that people can be really careful and watch for symptoms of this.”
