President Joe Biden took to the stage at the United States Air Force Academy graduation ceremony in Colorado on Thursday.
Biden, who delivered his graduation speech and proceeded to shake hands with the alumni, fell near the podium and was quickly helped back to his feet by those around him.
Biden, 80, walked away unassisted once he was upright. He continued to stand and greet people for the remainder of the ceremony.
Biden appeared to stumble upon a bag of black sand, according to pool reporters who were traveling with the president, and pointed to it again after he got up.
“He’s fine. There was a bag of sand on the podium as he shook hands,” White House communications director Ben LaBolt said on Twitter as videos of the incident circulated online.
Earlier, speaking to the alumni, Biden celebrated their work so far as he laid out the challenges that lie ahead.
“We have the best army in the history of the world,” he said. “And I have earned it. Today is the day to celebrate. As your Commander-in-Chief, I am honored to be here.”
