In 1982, the now retired Master Sgt. Andrea Motley Crabtree became the US Army’s first deep-sea submarine, and the first black deep-sea submarine across all US military branches. Her portrait is now part of an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I spoke to Elise Preston about her extraordinary career.
