The federal agency announced forecasts of 12 to 17 named storms, five to nine that will become hurricanes, and one to four that will become major hurricanes with winds over 110 mph. Normal is 14 named storms, seven of which become hurricanes and three of which are major hurricanes.
Hurricane season officially begins on June 1 (although storms have been known to form before the start of the season).
