Houston, Texas (KTRK) – The East Texas Baptist University baseball team is making history – and doing so with a lineup loaded with Houston area products.

On Friday, ETBU advanced into the NCAA Division III National Championship winner’s bracket with a 7-3 win against Salisbury, the 2022 NCAA Division II National Runner-up and 2021 National Champion.

Five of the nine starting hitters for ETBU in their NCAA Division III National Tournament debut are from here in Space City.

“Houston baseball has always been elite,” said Jacob Evangelista, a Cline Collins High School senior. “It prepared us for college and got us ready for the next level. I think we’ve all come from good organizations and good coaches in our past, and Houston has always been a big part of that.”

Evangelista was joined in the starting line-up for ETBU by fellow Houston-area producers Carson Wilson (Clements HS), Ben Lea (George Ranch HS), Brett Wagner (Brazoswood HS) and Nick Massarini (Travis HS).

“I think we’re a fun team,” Wilson remarked. “Since the beginning of the year, all we’ve been doing is having fun – and I think we’ve carried that through the season. It’s a huge factor in our success.”

The Tigers, 41 and 13, on the year, now faced Lynchburg on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. for the double-elimination tournament.
