Richmond, Virginia – Two people have been arrested after a shooting near Virginia Commonwealth University in downtown Richmond following a high school graduation ceremony left at least 13 people injured Tuesday, according to police and school district officials.

Seven people were shot, according to Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards. Three of them are said to have been seriously injured.

Police spokeswoman Tracy Walker said there was no longer an active threat to the community.

The Richmond Public Schools said in a message on its website that the shooting took place in Monroe Park, near the college campus, after a Huguenot high school graduation ceremony.

It was not immediately clear what caused the shooting or if students were among the injured.

“My department continues to monitor the terrible shooting incident in the heart of Richmond tonight,” Gov. Glenn Youngkin said on Twitter. “State law enforcement fully supports the Richmond Police Department as this investigation moves forward.”

VCU advised the community in an online alert at approximately 5:30 p.m. that police were responding after the shooting. The State Police sent out an alert warning people to avoid the area.

The district said a different graduation scheduled for later in the day was canceled “out of an abundance of caution” and that schools would be closed Wednesday.
