Houston, Texas (KTRK) – The Houston police officer accused of shooting his wife in the face told authorities the incident occurred while someone was breaking into the couple’s apartment. The police do not believe this story.
Ghalib Chowdhury appeared in court late Monday night. He stood in his prison jumpsuit as he listened to court officials detailing the case against him.
Officials say angry text messages Chaudhry sent to his wife Sadaf Iqbal on the night of the shooting and evidence in the couple’s apartment led them to believe this was no coincidence.
Police say Chowdhury told them someone broke into the apartment, and when the suspect was shot, his wife got in the way.
But officers say they found no signs of a break-in. When the police looked at his wife’s phone, they claimed to have seen several angry messages sent to Iqbal earlier in the night.
A pile of clothes on hangers on the floor of the apartment and a bag were also found nearby, according to police. Officers say they also saw an AR-15 on the apartment floor.
Court officials said Iqbal’s injuries were very serious.
They added, “The complainant sustained a bullet wound to her eyeball and right eyeball, a fractured cheekbone, and multiple fractures to her hand and fingers. The officers determined that the crime scene did not match the description of what allegedly occurred.”
Houston Police Department Chief Troy Fenner told ABC13 that Chowdhury is no longer on the force.
His bond was set at $125,000. The court issued a protective order whereby Chowdhury could not go within 200 feet of his wife.
