Rep. Brad Finstadt is attacked by a crew member at gunpoint after a congressional baseball game

An employee of Rep. Brad Finstadt was attacked at gunpoint just blocks from the Capitol building after Wednesday night Congressional Baseball for Charitysaid the Minnesota Republican.

One of his staff members was attacked outside his residence that night, Finstad said, after thousands of congressional staffers and residents of the Washington, D.C. area filled Nationals Park to watch Democratic and Republican congressmen — including Finstad — play ball.

“After the congressional baseball game for charity on Wednesday, one of my coworkers was attacked outside his home by a gunman,” Finstad said. “Fortunately, he will be able to make a full recovery and the extent of his physical injuries was minor. I thank the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department for their prompt response and attention to this incident.”

Finstadt’s office did not say the exact time of the accident or describe the injuries. However, according to a Metropolitan Police report obtained by CBS News Friday night, the victim told officers he was on his way home when two male suspects in black hoods pushed him to the ground, produced a gun and pointed it at him. He told the officers that he managed to escape without giving the suspects any of their belongings.

Police said no shots were fired during the incident.

“In Washington, D.C. and cities across the country, anti-politics and unregulated crime politics have created lawless communities that endanger the public and enable criminal behavior,” said Finstad. “It is time for us to start treating criminals like criminals and reinstate commonsense policies that incarcerate professional criminals, keep the public safe, and allow our police officers to adequately protect our communities and keep violent criminals off the streets.”

The Finstad employee is not the only employee or member to have been assaulted in Washington in recent months.
