The Apple Watch Ultra 2 could be revealed later this year, along with the Apple Watch Series 9. The tip comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman who The power of the newsletter Suggests a follow-up to Apple’s rugged wearable device sooner than expected.
Previous rumors had us believing that a follow-up to the Apple Watch Ultra wouldn’t see the light until 2024 but that may not be the case. Unfortunately, Gurman doesn’t have any information other than the fact that a) the product is up and coming and b) its codename is N210. However, that shouldn’t stop Ultra fans from getting excited about what the new product will bring to the table.
Apple Watch Ultra already has the largest display and longest battery life of any of Apple’s best watches, a customizable action button, and unique features like a safety beep. But this does not mean that improvements cannot be made.
Although the Ultra promises up to 36 hours of battery life (and it’ll last even longer with its low-power mode), it still can’t compete with Garmin’s best watches when it comes to longevity. Many will be looking for a longer period between charges than the Ultra 2, especially if you use it for a lot of GPS tracking or doubling as a dive computer.
Meanwhile, Gurman previously speculated that the Ultra’s Always-On Retina LTPO OLED Ultra’s Always-On Retina LTPO display could be swapped for a Micro LED version in a future update. In the TV world, Micro LED has been shown to deliver brighter colors and better angle viewing. Unfortunately, it is also more expensive to produce, so this may increase the cost of the wearable.
Apple Watch Ultra 2: bump in the processor?
As sudden and unlikely as this shift may seem for the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra, it’s possible that Apple will be looking to increase performance with a processor bump. The current Ultra runs on the S8 SiP with a 64-bit dual-core processor on top of Apple’s W3 and U1 chips. Since Apple has introduced new Watch processors every year since the first generation model, this might seem like a reasonable bet.
Benefits of the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 chip could include the ability to run more apps concurrently, not to mention improvements to all of the fitness tracking data that the Apple Watch Ultra collects. The added strength may also lead to Apple introducing new features that may be exclusive to Apple Watch Ultra 2.
Athletes, health fanatics, and weekend warriors will be watching Apple’s September event to unveil the Apple Watch Ultra 2. But a bunch of other updates appear to be on the way as well, including the iPhone 15, 13-inch MacBook Pro M3 as well as two iPad Pros with screens OLED. And just to cap things off that Gurman also mentioned, he’s started working on the AirPods Pro 3.
