A California company says it has received FAA certification for its first-ever flying car

For decades, futurists have dreamed of flying cars, with little progress in the real world. Now, a company is one step closer to making that vision a reality, and has secured government approval to test its sports car.

Alf, a California-based airline, recently announced that it had received a Special Certificate of Airworthiness from the Federal Aviation Administration, allowing it to drive the vehicle in limited locations.

The certification allows the vehicle to be driven in special circumstances, including exhibition and research and development, an FAA spokesperson said. Tell Fox Business.

Alef’s founders began work on the project in 2015, the year mentioned in the sci-fi classic “Back to the Future II” — which features flying cars — and unveiled a prototype late last year. Its first car, dubbed the Model A, is a street-legal car that can ride on roads and park in standard parking spaces.

The company said it can take off vertically and fly in the air in any direction. The car has a flight range of 110 miles, and a driving range of 200, according to Alf.

Becoming FAA certified “allows us to move closer to bringing people closer to greener and faster commutes, saving people and businesses hours every week,” said Alf CEO Jim Dukhovny. He said in the current situation.

The all-electric ride is priced at $300,000, with a more expensive hydrogen option offering longer range. It seats one or two people, depending on the company.

Sleek and gray, sports car-like, the vehicle features concealed fans and a pivoting cockpit to stabilize the driver and passenger.

According to its website, the company aims to create “the fastest and most convenient mode of transportation ever from point of origin to final destination,” describing its product as “the solution to modern congestion problems.”
