Mason Lefebvre said that growing up, he felt out of place playing hockey. But the goaltender moved on in 2016, and is now one of more than 150 members of the Team Trans ice hockey team, believed to be the first all-around, non-binary sports team in the United States.

Lefebvre said the team helps provide a “sense of community.”

“I never really understood the concept of a found family until I joined Team Trans,” he said.

For safety reasons, the team does not release players’ personal information, but Lefebvre said the support it provides has saved lives.

“There are players who have told me outright that they will no longer exist without Team Trans,” he said. “I’m glad we were able to help them, but I hate that we’re in a place where they need that help.”

Jace Mo, who only learned how to skate two years ago, said that even if they can’t change the hearts of others, players lift themselves up.

“Probably the biggest thing I learned from this group is that we are all human, and we will all fall,” Mo told CBS News. “And what really makes us a classy operation is that we’re a team of people who come back and keep going.”
