Las vigas — It sits on the Las Vegas skyline like an enormous starship, black and mysterious—until night falls, when it glows like Earth from space.

At 366 feet tall and 516 feet wide, it is described as the largest spherical structure in the world. The bowl-shaped theater is said to have the world’s highest definition wraparound LED screen. Its exterior is outfitted with 1.2 million hockey puck-sized LED lights that can be programmed to emit dynamic images on a massive scale – again, said to be the largest in the world.

But Sphere inspires enthusiastic responses from those who have seen it.

“It’s absolutely amazing to look up and see what’s in front of you,” says Rich Clavey, Sphere’s chief operating officer. “I’ve been in the entertainment business for almost 40 years. I’ve never seen anything like this, and I’m not exaggerating. It’s off the charts.”
The Sphere’s exterior will be illuminated each day and night with animations and other images, sometimes related to the season. For example, it can turn into a giant pumpkin at Halloween and a snow globe at Christmas.

The venue will host music and film events and some sports
Sphere is designed by densely populated, the global architecture firm behind many of the world’s best sports arenas. Inflated by the pandemic, construction costs have soared to $2.3 billion — more than the Sphere’s more attractive Vegas neighbors, including Bellagio Stadium and Allegiant.
Seating approximately 18,000 people, the Globe is located one long block east of the legendary Las Vegas Strip and will be connected by a pedestrian walkway to the Venetian Resort complex.
It is set to open on September 29 with “U2: UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere”, a series of 25 concerts based around the Irish band’s landmark 1991 album “Achtung Baby” and running through mid-December. Ticket prices start at $140.
The venue will also host exclusive shows for “Postcard from EarthA film directed by Darren Aronofsky that promises to take full advantage of the Sphere wide screen by offering viewers a tour around the planet.
“Most music venues are sports venues,” U2’s Bono says in an interview with Apple Music. “They’re designed for sports — they’re not designed for music. They’re not designed for art.”
“This building was built for an immersive experience in cinema and performance… You can’t just come in here and watch an ice hockey game.”
In November, the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix circuit will pass through Sphere property, and the arena hopes to eventually host boxing, mixed martial arts, and other events as well.
But the Sphere’s main draw may be its live music venue – especially the high-profile accommodations that Vegas is famous for.
The acts on stage will be dwarfed in front of the towering 16K LED screen, which wraps around and around much of the audience and can heighten the concert experience with 3D animations or close-ups of the performers.
“The screen goes from (level of) the ground to 250 feet up, all the way…” says Claffey, Sphere operations officer. “It keeps you completely immersed when you’re sitting in that bowl. I used to love IMAX in NYC, but this will blow that away.”
Sphere Producers promise next-level sound, too. More than 160,000 speakers dotted around the bowl, Claffey says, will deliver the same pristine sound to every seat, whether someone is in the top row or down on the floor.
The venue is also equipped with haptic seats that can vibrate to match what’s happening on the screen—an earthquake, for example—and 4D machines that can create wind, temperature, and even smell effects.
“The way I describe it to my friends and family is that it’s my entertainment of the future,” says Claffey.
If everything sounds a little over the top, well – this is Vegas.
It remains to be seen whether Sphere can deliver on its exorbitant promises. But if it works, your live music experience may never be the same.
